Sketch & Line Art to SVG

From Paper to Vector Paths

Ink drawings, hand lettering, tattoo flash, coloring pages and signatures all share one thing: dark lines on a light background. That is exactly the kind of image that vectorizes best.

The Line art setting is tuned for dark strokes on a light background. It keeps the shape of your strokes and turns them into smooth, single-color paths, so you get clean outlines you can edit instead of a grey, pixelated scan.

Use the SVG to color your drawing in Illustrator, Inkscape or Procreate, to make a cut file for Cricut or Silhouette, or to engrave it with LightBurn or Glowforge.

Tips

Tips for the Best Sketch & Line Art to SVG Results

Scan, do not photograph, if you can

A flat scan with even light gives the cleanest result. If you use a phone, shoot straight on, in daylight, with no shadow across the page.

Ink over pencil

Dark, solid lines trace best. Go over the final lines with a pen or marker and erase the pencil before scanning.

Choose Line art

Under Artwork in Options, pick "Line art" for drawings, or "Silhouette (2 colours)" for bold, filled shapes like stencils.

3 simple steps

How to Convert Sketch & Line Art to SVG

Scan or photograph a drawing, hand lettering or a signature and turn the ink into clean, smooth vector paths, ready to color in a design tool, cut on a Cricut or engrave with a laser..

  1. Step 1

    Scan or photograph the drawing

Scan at 300 dpi if you can. If you photograph it, use even light, avoid shadows and shoot straight down so the lines are not distorted.

  2. Step 2

    Lines become single-color paths

Paper texture and pencil smudges are dropped, and the ink lines are traced into clean, smooth vector strokes in one color.

  3. Step 3

    Choose Line art and download

If Auto does not pick it, set Artwork to "Line art" in Options. Set Background to "Remove" for a transparent SVG, then download.

FAQ

Sketch & Line Art to SVG: Questions and Answers

Can I turn my signature into an SVG?

Yes. Sign in dark ink on white paper, scan or photograph it, and upload the image. Choose "Line art" and set Background to "Remove" for a transparent signature you can place on documents and designs.

Will it work with a phone photo of my drawing?

Yes, as long as the lighting is even. Shadows and uneven light can show up as extra shapes, so a flat scan gives the cleanest lines.

Does it make centerline (single-stroke) paths?

No. Lines are traced as filled outline shapes, which is what cutters, printers and most design tools expect. Single-stroke pen plotter paths are not produced.

Can I use the SVG with Cricut?

Yes. Upload the SVG to Cricut Design Space and it comes in as cut shapes. Set Background to "Remove" first so the paper area is not cut as well.
